Future Of Strange New Worlds Episode 7 Villains Teased By Showrunner

The showrunner of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds teases the future of two villains who were introduced in episode 7. Strange New Worlds is the newest series in the streaming service Paramount+’s increasingly vast Star Trek universe. The show stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the man who stood at the helm of the USS Enterprise before Captain Kirk ever set foot on board. Along with several other familiar faces, including Celia Rose Gooding as Uhura and Ethan Peck as Spock, Captain Pike is among the first cadre of Starfleet captains to explore the outer reaches of space. In the overall timeline of the universe, this show takes place after the events of Star Trek: Discovery and before Star Trek: The Original Series.

Last week, on Thursday, June 16, 2022, Strange New Worlds aired season 1, episode 7, which was titled “The Serene Squall.” In the episode, Spock meets and forms a quick bond with new character Dr. Aspen, played by Queer as Folk actor Jesse James Keitel. However, in a shocking twist, when the Enterprise is boarded by pirates in dangerous territory, Aspen reveals that they are actually a pirate known as Captain Angel. Captain Angel was hellbent on freeing a Vulcan prisoner of the ship, who was later revealed to be Spock’s half-brother Sybok, a controversial character introduced in the critically maligned 1989 feature Star Trek V: The Final Frontier.

While speaking with Inverse, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Henry Alonso Myers spoke about the future of the two major villains glimpsed in episode 7. Myers said they would love to have Captain Angel back on the show, as their intention was to “create a charismatic villain who steals the show and whom we want to see again and again.” He was a little more tight-lipped regarding Sybok, saying that — should the character appear on the show again — “we will see his face.” Read his full quote below:

That was the idea; create a charismatic villain who steals the show and whom we want to see again and again. We would love to see more of Angel, absolutely…

When and if we see Sybok again we will see his face, absolutely.

After today’s premiere of episode 8, “The Elysian Kingdom,” there are only three episodes left in Strange New Worlds season 1. Given Myers’ expressing desire for Captain Angel to return rather than certainty, it seems unlikely that fans will be glimpsing them before the finale on July 7. However, his caginess about revealing more information about Sybok likely means that the character, who has so far only been seen from behind, could play a major role in the end of the season.

At any rate, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is certainly building up a strong roster of villains, both new and familiar. The good news for fans is that the show has already been renewed for season 2, which is currently in production. Going forward, there will likely be plenty of opportunities to explore these villainous characters as they cross paths with the crew of the Enterprise, whether or not they are able to appear again before the end of season 1.
